What is the philosophy of Relastin?

Niquette: Elastin is the protein that gives skin its “bounce.” According to Revance Therapeutics’ Chief Scientific Officer, Jacob Waugh, MD, “Elastin stops being produced in our teens. Existing elastin then starts to degenerate from age and sun exposure. The result is elastosis, in which there is a loss of function in the skin’s elastin. This causes skin to wrinkle and sag.” The skin’s ability to produce elastin is the new focus in anti-aging. Recent clinical studies prove that functional elastin is the key to tighter, firmer, more youthful skin. However, consumers should be aware of the difference between functional elastin and elastin fragments. Functional elastin is a long, healthy elastic fiber capable of rebounding, like a rubber band. In contrast, elastin fragments are much shorter. Similar to chopped up rubber bands, they are incapable of springing back. Relastin is the only product that clinically demonstrates the ability to increase functional elastin.

Niquette: Creams that contain elastin or collagen protein fibers might claim to help increase elasticity in your skin. Unfortunately, applying these fibers directly to your skin doesn't help it look younger for two reasons.

First, these fibers are too large to penetrate the pores in your skin, so they can't reach the dermis, where your connective tissue is located.

Secondly, even if the fibers could penetrate your pores, they'd never become functional. Functional protein fibers are produced by your body's own cells and work within your skin's framework to make your skin spring back. Because the elastin or collagen in a jar of cream is non-functional; it will never become part of your skin's framework and can't improve your skin's elasticity, tone, or texture.
