Describe the atmosphere of the SPA at Grand Velas Riviera Maya.

Leticia: The $15 million architecturally striking SPA at Grand Velas Riviera Maya is inspired by the jungle and natural water pools of the Yucatan Peninsula. Mexican Architects Ricardo Elias and Alexis Elias of Elias&Elias AR preserved the stone, plants, and streams specific to the Riviera Maya landscape and incorporated them into the curved, organic design of the two-level, 89,000 square-foot spa. The cavernous lower level takes its inspiration from the region’s underground water pools, or cenotes, and a hand-hewn rock wall emerges from a winding chlorine-free pool that’s outfitted with water-bubble beds, cascades and a gurgling volcanic geyser. The Spa at Grand Velas Riviera Maya features 40 treatment rooms and suites complemented with Mexican and Balinese artwork and furnishings.

What is the most popular spa service?

Leticia: We have several popular treatments, including the MAYA YAXCHE EXPERIENCE (80 MIN./$XX). Venture into a unique experience with a four hand massage, inspired by ancient Mayan traditions and dance. This treatment is used to balance and restore the physical and spiritual forces within our internal cosmos. Through the choreography, you will be able to visualize the soothing serpent, the jaguar’s steps and the eagle’s flight. A copal resin ritual with deep spiritual significance for the Mayan culture initiates this journey into wellness.

What product lines do you use at your spa?

Leticia: Natura Bissé, Decleor, Sundari, Comfort Zone, Germaine de Capuccini

Why should our readers visit the SPA at Grand Velas Riviera Maya?

Leticia: Built amid the lush jungle that hugs the AAA Five Diamond resort, the SPA at Grand Velas Riviera Maya features Seven Journeys, each one a collection dedicated to a renowned spa culture. Guests can select from one-of-a-kind massage treatments based on Mayan mysticism and lore on the Journey Through Native Mexico, Ayurvedic-inspired treatments on Travels through India, or a sumptuous Honey Melt Scrub, Olive-Clay Wrap, and Spain’s most luxe skin-care service, all on the Mediterranean Voyage. Each thematic Journey—such as Nature’s Aromatherapy Trail, World Travels, and Inner Journey—includes approximately five treatments that best represent these spa-going traditions. The Men’s Journey help male spa-goers easily find a selection of treatments that’s right for them.

In addition to an international spa menu, the Spa at Grand Velas Riviera Maya features a natural subterranean level as the center of the spa, entirely dedicated to relaxation and the restorative facilities that comprise the Water Journey. Almost 40,000-square feet are given to men’s and women’s sides, each with custom-designed amenities including a Clay Room, a circular glass-tile-lined steam room with a fiber-optic “star light” ceiling, an Ice Room with floor-to-ceiling window, and hot-and-cold Experience Showers. A central pool in movement, that has powerful massaging faucets throughout and carved-stone chaises with jets set just underneath the surface of the water on which guests recline. Two stunning slate-grey stone-tiled walls bisect the central hydrotherapy pool, dividing the equally spacious and especially private men’s and women’s sides.
