Please share your philosophy about skincare.

As it pertains to women of color, that is, those of African, African American, Southeast Asian, and Latina decent, my philosophy is that "…people are fundamentally the same, skin is not.” Women with pigmented or brown skin have very specific and unique needs and problems. I created Dr. Susan Taylor’s Rx for Brown Skin to address those needs.

What are some of the biggest skin care problems you see among women of color?

The most significant skin care problem that I see in women of color is hyperpigmentation, which consists of dark marks, discolorations, and blemishes. Let’s consider the common skin condition acne. An acne bump or pimple, once formed, will last about 7 days and then resolve. In women of color, when the pimple resolves, a dark mark will be left. That dark mark may last for many months before it disappears. Multiple dark marks on one’s face are unsightly and can negatively impact self-esteem. The next most significant problem in women of color relates to the fact that brown skin is very sensitive and easily irritated. Once irritated or inflamed, hyperpigmentation will result (and we know how long lasting that can be). Therefore, it is important that women of color use skincare products that are non-irritating and appropriate for sensitive skin.

What inspired your skin care line, Rx for Brown Skin?

So many of my patients were unhappy with or not satisfied with the skin care products that were available. These products were not addressing their needs including hyperpigmentation and sensitive skin. Given my background in dermatology and the research that I was engaged in, I decided that I was equipped to meet the needs of these patients.

What are some tips for women to maintain healthy skin?

First, understand the needs of your skin and know that those needs may change depending upon the season, your travel schedule or even the stressors in your life. Know if your skin is dry, oily, sensitive, hyperpigmenting, or acne-prone, to name just a few. Then, invest in a good skin care regimen specifically designed for your skin. Cleansing gently twice daily is a must. Avoid abrasives that may irritate your skin. See a dermatologist if you have any skin care concerns.
